I regard 2013 as a demarcation line. Before 2013, Piaget set several records of world’s thinnest movements. Also, Piaget challenged to the ultra-thin mechanical movements with grand complicated functions. In 2002, Piaget Cal.600P with tourbillon came out. Piaget Cal.608P with relative tourbillon was unveiled at SIHH 2006. To 2013, Piaget 1290P Minute Repeater gave the watchmaking industry a surprise. To that year, Piaget has been a “grand slam” champion in the field of grand complicated functions. Piaget has entered another stage of challenging to new ultra-thin movements since 2014.
Piaget Altiplano 900P
Borrowing some designs from Concord Delirium watch and Swatch plastic watches produced in the 1980s, Piaget created the Altiplano 38mm 900P in 2014. Piaget regards the case back as the baseplate of calibre 900p, so that the entire thickness is reduced. The innovative framework makes 3.65mm-thick calibre 900p possible. Two years later, Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Ultra Thin Squelette took away the title of the world’s thinnest movement. The 3.60mm-thick Jaeger-LeCoultre Master watch was more impressive at SIHH 2016.
Piaget Altiplano Chronograph Flyback
The title “Ultra-thin Watchmaker” of Piaget is often challenged by other outstanding watchmakers, but Piaget keeps moving on the road to the ultra-thin wristwatches. Piaget launched the Altiplano Chronograph Flyback in 2015. To today, Piaget is the record-keeper of the thinnest mechanical chronograph. Piaget used traditional framework to design the Chronograph Flyback, but to people’s surprise, it is at 8.24mm thick, whose inner movement, calibre 883P is just 4.65 thick. What’s more, Calibre 883P is fitted with the column wheel, vertical clutch mechanism and Flyback.
Piaget Altiplano Ultimate Automatic 910P
In resent years, Bvlgari are seen as a growing threat to Piaget in the ultra-thin watchmaking. To compete for the glory, watchmakers use their brains. After Bvlgari Octo Finissimo Automatic (The entire thickness is 5.15mm and the movement’s thickness is 2.23mm.) came out, Piaget Altiplano Ultimate Automatic 910P was an echo. It was added into a periphery rotor on basis of calibre 900P, whose entire thickness is 4.30mm. As far as I know, the record was kept for just three months by Piaget.
Piaget Altiplano Ultimate Concept
Piaget Altiplano Ultimate Concept is a blockbuster at SIHH 2018, the world’s thinnest mechanical wristwatch so far. It’s 2mm thick. By comparing to the record by Jaeger-LeCoultre, the thickness of Piaget Altiplano Ultimate Concept is reduced by 1.60mm. To complete the masterpiece, Piaget simplify a lot of components to save the space for case back, bezel and crystal. The redesigned movement is fitted with ball bearing, barrels without case and cover and suspension-typed regulating mechanism. Most sapphire crystal is more than 1mm thick, while 0.2mm-thick sapphire crystal applies to Piaget Altiplano Ultimate Concept. To ensure enough hardness, case is made of high-tech cobalt-based alloy. In terms of these innovative improvement, it’s hard to break the new record.
